Highland Hotel Ahead in Race to Go Green
By IAN FORSYTH 08:50 - 01 November 2006 - This is north Scotland (The Press and Journal)
A Small Highland hotel claimed yesterday it had stolen a march on one of Scotland's top hotels.
The Press and Journal reported this week that the five-star Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire was planning to go green to help the environment. Its guests may soon be asked to pay a "carbon levy" to enjoy its sumptuous accommodation and fine dining. Gleneagles is also installing a £400,000 woodchip-fuelled boiler as part of a range of measures aimed at combating the negative effects of climate change.
The 30-bedroom Lovat Arms Hotel at Fort Augustus is already well on the way to cutting its environmental impact, however. As part of a £600,000 refurbishment at the property by owners the Gregory family, a £30,000 woodchip boiler is being installed. The latest computerised technology is also to be introduced to control the temperature in the bedrooms and public areas, saving on unnecessary heat loss throughout the day. Caroline Gregory, who owns the hotel with her parents David and Geraldine,
said their ever-developing environmental policy also included the likes
of energy-saving lamps and "eco-friendly" cleaning products.
All measures, however small go some way towards making Scotland
carbon neutral.
Most of the Lovat Arms is closed during the refurbishment. Although
six studio rooms are open for business, it could be March before the
entire hotel is reopened. The Manchester Evening News review
